The Center for Consumer Freedom

October 18, 2007

An op-ed was published in the OC Register today. It was written by one David Martosko, Director of Research for the Center for Consumer Freedom.

Who is the Center for Consumer Freedom, you ask?  Very simply put (from Source Watch): It runs media campaigns which oppose the efforts of scientists, doctors, health advocates, environmentalists and groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, calling them “the Nanny Culture — the growing fraternity of food cops, health care enforcers, anti-meat activists, and meddling bureaucrats who ‘know what’s best for you.’ “

Now, how can anyone be against Mothers Against Drunk Driving? Well, I guess if you’ve got no soul, nothing matters except your pocketbook.

While I don’t know the Center for Consumer Freedom, MADD, while I applaud their intentions, promotes very questionable methods. They are responsible for the random sobriety checkpoints. A seemingly good idea, until you realize that you have to prove innocence to pass the checkpoint. That is counter to the Constitution and a very slippery slope. In some states you are required to submit a blood sample if the cop demands it.

While opposing MADD may mean I have no soul, I would rather live in a free country.

BTW, for the record, I almost never drink. So I am not worried about getting caught driving drunk.

Sarah, thanks for this post. I was so infuriated when I read that op-ed piece. So much of it is ludicrous (sp?). I sent a letter to the editor in response and hope they publish it. And you’re so right about money being the only thing the people at the Center for Consumer Freedom care about. They claim to care about consumers, but in reality they don’t.
