a day on the farm

August 23, 2007

today i arrived at the sanctuary to find that eugene steer passed away overnight. eugene is the second steer to pass away in the middle of the night since i’ve been here. the other was nellie, and that was terribly heartbreaking. it took roberti a few days to recover from that. even worse was when we lost calvin, who was roberti’s best friend.

eugene arrived at our sanctuary in 1995, just a couple years after we had opened. eugene was found abandoned at a stockyard, left to die because he would not sell. he was just a baby then. he lived a good long life of happiness here at our sanctuary, and he touched a lot of people’s lives in the process.

if you’ve ever visited us, you probably visited our “special needs herd” where you would’ve found roberti, nellie, tyler, eugene, calvin, and ben. there are only three of the special needs steers left in the herd, and given their ages and fragile bones, it’s only a matter of time before there is no herd left at all. of course, we have 30 other cattle waiting in the wings, and it won’t be too long before a lot of them start developing the typical old age arthritis and other joint problems.

i’m glad eugene was able to leave us at his own choosing and that he was surrounded by some of his closest friends. i will never forget that cute tuft of hair on the top of his head.
